What is a homestudy?

A homestudy is a written report required by Texas, Florida & Michigan law that serves as an assessment of the prospective adoptive family. A homestudy is completed by a licensed social worker, who will address the overall safety and appropriateness of the home. The social worker will also compile information about the adoptive family's life experiences, financial stability, health status, and parenting styles.

Why do I need to complete a homestudy?

All adoptive parents must receive a favorable homestudy before an adoptive child can be legally placed in the home. Homestudy guidelines and requirements are established by the Texas, Florida or Michigan Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). DFPS is the agency that regulates and manages all adoptions in the state of Texas. All homestudies completed for Texas and Michigan residents must meet DFPS minimum standards and policies. If your family is adopting internationally, your homestudy must meet all requirements for United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and the birth country of your child or children.

How long does a homestudy take to complete?

The length of time to complete a homestudy will vary based on your family's particular adoption program. On average, Great Wall social workers are completing homestudies in four to six weeks upon receiving all of the appropriate documentation.

What is a homestudy update?

For Texas, the law requires families to complete a homestudy update if an adoptive child has not been placed in the home within six months from the time the initial homestudy was completed. A homestudy update must also be completed if any significant change occurs in the home. For example, a change in employment, a move, or a new child enters the home.

What is a post-placement/post adoption report?

Most adoption programs require post-placement or post adoption reports. These reports are designed to assess the overall adjustment and transition of the adoptive child and family. Post-placement/adoption supervision also provides an opportunity for the adoptive family to discuss any concerns with a qualified social worker. The number of post-placements/adoption reports and home visits will vary depending on your family's adoption program.
