Donating to their child's orphanage is one way for parents to say “thank you” or "xie xie" to the orphanage director, staff and nannies who took care of their children. The donations are used to purchase needed items for the orphanage such as microwaves, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, autoclaves and linens. The purchased items help to greatly improve the living conditions at each orphanage.
Because we have learned in the past item donations from the families can often get held up in customs, much to the disappointment of all, Great Wall devised a plan to circumvent all potential problems with shipping to China. We’ve eliminated shipping all together! Families can contact Great Wall to request an orphanage donation list. Once a family or travel group selects an item from the donation list, Great Wall's China Division in Beijing will purchase the item and deliver it to the specified orphanage. Many orphanages are in need of basic necessities such as refrigerators, AC/heater units, washing machines, dryers, and cribs.
Travel groups are encouraged to donate through Gifts of Love prior to traveling and in lieu of giving individual gifts to nannies and orphanage directors. Your child’s orphanage director is likely to have multiple watches and other such gifts from past adoptive families, when what s/he really wants is a washing machine for the orphanage.
If you are interested in joining the other members of your travel group to donate to your child’s orphanage prior to travel, please inform your travel advisor. Great Wall will provide you with an orphanage donations list from your child’s orphanage. It really is a gift that goes on giving.
In order to sufficiently cover the costs and to arrange the delivery of appliances and other gifts to the orphanages, there is a $500 minimum value donation for this charity project. Groups can collaborate to raise the funds for gifts for a particular orphanage.
