From a Shared Past to a Shared Future
Every family’s adoption journey is unique, and our China matching specialists love being a part of each one. GWCA’s China adoption program gives families the opportunity to play a role in their matching process, so from the moment a family begins their journey, they work with our adoption specialists to figure out what age range, needs, and gender they might be looking for in a kiddo.
Due to the policies in place by the Chinese government limiting the number of children that each family can have, it is very rare that we see sibling groups available for adoption in China. As such, many families choose to adopt two unrelated children simultaneously so that they can travel to China and welcome both of them into their family at the same time. While the two children being adopted may not be related biologically, simultaneous adoption is a fantastic way to bring two different children from a shared past into a shared future!
The story below is from one of our China adoption specialists, Mallory, who had the pleasure of working with a family that began their adoption journey with the idea of siblings in mind. Now, just one year after beginning their paperwork, they’ve been matched with two incredible kiddos from the same orphanage and they’re preparing to bring them home forever!
Since this family was looking for children with more minor medical needs, we initially held off on looking at special focus children during their dossier phase so the family could have the option to be locked with an LID child.
Three weeks before the family was about to submit their dossier we received two special focus kiddos from one of our newest orphanage partnerships. The girl was 4 years old and the boy was 3 years old; both with heart conditions.
It’s not often that we receive files for children from the same orphanage with the same need who are so close in age. I immediately thought of this particular family knowing that this might be the closest to adopting siblings as they were going to get.
The family had both files reviewed by a physician who had nothing but amazing things to say about the prognosis for both children. These two kiddos wound up being the perfect matches for this family and our partnership with their orphanage made this possible. This family had a very unique process and their children will have a very unique and special story to tell someday. I couldn’t be happier for them!

8 New Kids Are Waiting!
Meet Emma! Emma is an adorable little girl who is 1 1/2 years old! She was born with Down’s Syndrome and anal atresia. She has received 3 surgeries for her anal atresia and is doing very well now! Emma is developing extremely well for her age and for her special need. She is able to sit and crawl independently and can stand holding the handrail. She babbles all day long and loves to giggle at her caretakers. She is described as being quiet, cute and well behaved. She loves to smile when someone calls her name and she can say hello and goodbye by waving and blowing kisses! Emma loves to clap her hands to the rhythm of music and play seesaw with her friends. Emma is from one of our orphanage partnerships but has also spent some time at an American run foster home in China where she has been exposed to English! Mina is an adorable little girl from China who is about to turn 8 years old. She was not abandoned and sent to the orphanage until she was almost 6 years old, so she was presumably with her birth family for the first 6 years of her life. This probably means that she received more one-on-one attention when she was a young child before coming to the orphanage.
Mina has a hearing impairment and she started to wear a hearing aid as of May 2016. Because of this, Mina is delayed on her language development. However she can understand the instructions of her caretakers, partially by observing the mouth shapes that her caregivers make, and she can use signs to convey what she wants and needs. She is making sounds and she picking up more and more all the time.
Mina is described by her caretakers as being adorable, having a ready smile and being very kind. She likes to play outside and with other children. She is also said to be a great helper to her caregivers and will do things like throwing trans into the trash can and cleaning up water that has spilled on the floor.

This adorable kiddo’s name is Cora, and she just turned 7 this past January! Cora has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a malformed right hand, and a malformed left food. She is able to understand most language, but has trouble expressing language herself. That being said, she has a wide range of expressive ability and is able to express her needs clearly to her caregivers. She is currently receiving physical rehabilitation services, music education, and acupuncture to help with her mobility delays. She is thriving with the assistance of her caregivers and will likely do even better with the consistent care of a forever family. She loves to listen to music, watch cartoons, build blocks, and play with her friends. She loves puzzles and is able to finish them quickly! Cora has incredible self care ability, and is able to put on clothes and take off shoes without assistance. She does still need assistance to use the bathroom, but she is making great progress. Meet Seth! Seth is a cute little guy who will be turning 2 years old in April. He was born with cerebral palsy and CHD. He received surgery for his heart condition and is doing much better now! He was 1 year old when his file was prepared and at that time he was described as active, obedient and giggly! His motor skills were developing typically and he was able to sit up on his own and hold his toys. He could understand the facial expressions of adults, respond when his name is called and eat treats independently. Jason is a sweet boy from China that recently turned 11 years old. Jason was born deaf but has since received a Cochlear Implant and so he has quite a bit of hearing ability now. Since he received his Cochlear Implant 4 years ago, has attended a special boarding school to help him learn language and speech.
Jason has great self-care skills and he is a very easy person to live with. He has an easy-going personality and gets along well with others. He likes to draw and make models with his hands. Jason is good at math and he likes to play basketball with other children at school.

Meet Cody! Cody is an adorable little guy who is 4 years old. One of his testicles has not yet descended but he seems to be developing typically in all other areas! Cody can effectively understand and follow directions from his caretakers and independently manage some self care tasks. He can get dressed on his own, feed himself, help his foster mom in the kitchen and express his daily needs! Cody’s fine and gross motor skills have developed typically for a child his age and he doesn’t seem to have any delays in these areas. Meet Marshall! Marshall is a precious kiddo who just turned 3 in February. He is diagnosed with encephalopathy and a possible chromosomal abnormality. He also has cryptorchidism, meaning that his right testicle has not descended. Overall, he is a sweet kiddo who would thrive with the love and care of a forever family! He does have overall mobility delays, but he is able to turn, crawl, raise his head, and hold on to his favorite toys. He is babbling to express his needs and loves to hold hands with this other kiddos. He is described as being a cheery little guy! #StaffSpotlight: Meet Heidi!
This month we are so excited to give all of our families the chance to learn a little bit more about Heidi, one of GWCA’s China adoption specialists!
1. What is your job title and description here at GWCA/CAN?
International Adoption Counselor – China Home Finding Team
2. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love my job! I love getting to help children who don’t have parents find their forever families and I love helping families find their future child in China! My favorite thing is when I can help get an aging out child matched with a family. Recently I helped two children (April & Jonathan) who are aging out this coming Fall get matched with their future Forever Families and it was the highlight of my year thus far! Older children, especially boys, are the hardest to get placed and once they turn 14 they no longer can be adopted according to China’s laws, so they desperately need to be adopted by families.
3. What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
The most difficult part about my job is not being able to help all the children I advocate for get adopted. You can try and try to get a child placed, but at the end of the day it just might not happen. It’s especially hard to see the huge amount of children with down syndrome not get matched, as there are hundreds, if not thousands of these precious little ones who have active adoption files and are just sitting in their orphanages, waiting for their forever families to find them.
4. How have you grown personally from working at GWCA/CAN and with their families?
I got to travel to China last year and met over 100 children at 6 of GWCA’s Orphanage Partnerships. This changed everything for me as an adoption counselor because I really got to see first hand how amazing and resilient these kids are. It made me realize more than ever that these children are not their special needs, but that their special needs are just a small part of who they are. These kids are so funny, kind and full of life and love. They want to be adopted and have parents so badly! They yearn for the love of a family! I became an infinitely better Adoption Counselor after my trip to China because I actually understood the true nature of who these kiddos are and how important helping them find families really is. There are so many incredible families I have gotten to know over the years of working at Great Wall and I am so privileged to have helped them find their child in China. Nothing brings me more joy than getting to call a family up and tell them that they have officially been matched with their child. I also love getting to follow family’s on Facebook and on their blogs because then I get to see their entire adoption journey unfold. I love getting to see when the families post about picking up their children on “gotcha day” and bringing them home! There is nothing more rewarding for me as an Adoption Councilor than seeing a child come home with their forever family and experiencing what it is like to receive that unconditional love they have been waiting for their entire lives.
5. Why do you love adoption?
I love adoption because you are taking a child who was abandoned and left behind and saying “I choose you” and bringing them into your family. It is the most beautiful picture to me of what love can look like. There are so many children already born into this world that need families and even though they are not your biological family, you choose to make them your family. Family is more than DNA. Family is about choosing to love someone and accepting them no matter what for the rest of their lives. Adoption to me is what family is all about.
From Found to Forever: A Life Changing Trip to China
“On my way from the hotel to meet DJ at his hotel!!…” This proud mom wrote only moments before meeting the first of her two boys in China. “…A whole range of emotions right now. I can’t imagine what he is going through since he will be leaving everything he knows to come to America as our son. Praying that his precious heart is protected during this time of excitement, but also grief. It’s crazy that after all these months of paperwork and prayers, that I am finally picking up our son!!”
After participating in our Orphan hosting program and saying a difficult goodbye to one of her soon-to-be sons (“SC”), this amazing mom and her family have been hard at work to complete their adoption process and bring him home forever. During their adoption process, they fell in love with another amazing boy who was hosted by an advocate family, and their family grew by one more! Now, they’ve finally reached the part of their journey that they’ve been longing for – the trip to China to bring their boys home.
Below are the stories from both of the boys’ Gotcha Days, as well as an emotional visit to SC’s finding place. Check back soon for an update on this incredible family’s journey!
DJ’s Gotcha Day
God is so good and has answered so many specific prayer requests. The transition has been amazing so far with DJ. When we arrived at the hotel, both of us were a little unsure of what was going on. The orphanage staff told me that he had been asking every few minutes when I was arriving because he was ready to go. So much for less luggage, he came home with 2 backpacks and another bag full of toys! I need to buy another suitcase already. He had a whole backpack of just snacks for me. He told the staff all morning that no one else could eat the snacks but his mom! When we first started talking between us and the translators, he started to cry. He quickly told my guide that they were happy tears because he was so glad to finally have a family. He said that he has wanted a mom and dad of his own, forever. He has totally won my heart and already has me wrapped around his finger.
Showing me a book full of pictures from his childhood. What a HUGE blessing this is. They also gave me the outfit he came to the orphanage in as a baby. Both of these are invaluable gifts!!
After leaving the hotel meeting where we signed paperwork for guardianship for the night (our adoption will be official tomorrow), we headed to get our family photo. As we walked, I held DJ’s hand. At one point I had to let go, he quickly grabbed my hand again as we started walking. When we got back to the hotel, I gave him his Lego set and that kept him busy for over an hour. He is very inquisitive and asks a lot of questions, which has been difficult with the language barrier. We are slowly figuring things out though as we go. He is already working on English words and I’m learning more Chinese.
SC’s Gotcha Day
After months of work and prayers, I was reunited today with SC. before SC went back to China, Wayne and I told him that every time he saw the moon, he was to remember that we were in America praying for him. We were not able to tell DJ that (as we were not his host family), but we were praying for him as well. God has continually been gracious and merciful to us throughout this entire process. Today was no exception. I was blown away once again by God’s grace and compassion. He truly loves these children.
I had so much trouble sleeping last night. I was so excited for today that I felt like a kid going to Disneyland. Even DJ woke up and the first thing he asked was, “SC?” We ate an amazing breakfast and then piled into the van to drive to SC’s orphanage. Originally we were going to have the family day at the Civil Affairs Office, but it got moved to the orphanage. What a blessing that was! It was amazing to see where SC has lived the last 10 years. The orphanage was beautiful and colorful. You could tell that the workers genuinely love the children.
We were ushered into an office after meeting one of the chaperones from the summer hosting. DJ loved seeing her again. We did some paperwork for temporary guardianship (adoption is finalized tomorrow). I was blessed with another photo album book with baby pictures and pictures of SC’s childhood. We even have a note from his birth parents that they left with him and he was abandoned! After a few minutes, SC finally arrived.
It was so wonderful to see his sweet smile and to hug him again. We were able to catch up and talk a little with all the workers. We then all proceeded to walk through the orphanage to SC’s foster parents’ home, which was on the same property.
SC got to show me his bedroom, his awards from school, introduced me to his foster parents, and even played the piano for us. It was such an amazing opportunity. I feel so blessed to have seen and experienced this part of his life. At one point his foster mom started crying. She has cared for SC for 6 years and helped him when he had surgery on his foot. She also just said goodbye to another foster daughter last week. She was adopted as well. I was able to hug his foster mom and tell her how much we appreciate all that she has done for SC. It was beautiful, heart breaking, and surreal all at the same time. So many emotions in the room.
SC has been non-stop smiles. DJ and him are getting along as though they are long lost brothers and best friends. We spent the afternoon playing Legos, transformers, and we also took a little walk. One cannot forget food. Both of these boys can eat!! SC shared his snacks from his foster parents with DJ in the car. It was so sweet. He also brought out a bag of cookies and said it was for Baba and his sisters. He is so thoughtful!!
This evening we went to a Chengdu Opera where they have the famous mask changing show. Both of the boys had a blast.
SC’s Finding Place
Seeing SC’s finding place was special, but it also stirred up a ton of emotions. I happened to see a mom feeding her small baby and I wondered what went through SC’s parent’s minds when they sat him in an area they knew he would be found and could receive help. They had cared for their sweet baby boy for three months. They left a note on him. I still have to have someone translate it for me all the way, but they explained that he needed help with his foot. I cannot imagine the anguish they experienced leaving behind this baby they loved in order for him to get the medical help he needed.
Visiting this spot not only stirred up emotions for me, but it must have stirred up emotions for SC as well. It is one thing to read about and take training on trauma and loss, it is another thing to experience it first hand. About five minutes after we got into the van, I looked back to talk to the boys and I saw that SC didn’t look well. He looked distressed. When I asked him what was wrong via the guide, he told her that he was experiencing car sickness. This surprised me because he never once was car sick over the last two days or over the month he was with us this summer. Emily (our guide) quickly surmised the situation and said that he was probably experiencing a lot of emotions that were making him sick, and he didn’t want to admit it but say it was just car sickness. SC told me he felt nauseous and very dizzy. I looked it up and emotional distress can make people feel physically ill, including feeling nauseous and dizziness. It broke my heart to see my son hurting so deeply that he felt sick. I encouraged him to always feel free to express his feelings to us and I also told him how much we all love him. I told him that we would always be there for him and he can tell us anything and we will listen. It took him about 20 minutes to feel better.
It breaks my heart to know that our boys will probably always have questions, experience hurt and pain from their past, and feel lost at times. This is one reason I have tried to hard to document everything I can about this trip through pictures, saving memorabilia like newspapers, taking pictures of foster family members, and even taking pictures of finding places. All of these pieces will help me answer future questions, to the best of my ability, to help them through their struggle. This is why I also feel so blessed to have important things like DJ’s outfit when he was found, a copy of SC’s finding letter, baby pictures of the boys, etc.
We are now in Guangzhou, where we will finish the last of the paperwork for the US side. In the end, we will have the boys’ visas so that we can travel to the United States. When the plane lands, they will be US citizens. We have really enjoyed being adventurous this trip. Our guide told us where McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks, and Pizza Hut was located. I avoid those places in the states and I don’t plan on eating Western food while in CHINA!! We ventured out tonight and found a Japanese restaurant that had amazing ramen. SC took charge and placed the order for us in Chinese. He ordered the noodle dishes and coke for me, DJ and himself. I had to fake liking the coke because I really don’t like it. SC caught me making a face when I drank it. Oops! The boys LOVE their noodles and are so fun to watch. While we were waiting for the bill, the boys entertained themselves – SC found creative ways to use his wipe and DJ figured out if he put coke in his soup spoon, he could drink it backwards.

Meet Rhett! Rhett is a smiley boy who is 8 years old! He was born with cerebral palsy and since starting rehabilitation services, has improved greatly on all of his motor skills! Based on his medical file, he lives in a foster family environment and gets along very well with his foster siblings. He is described as being active, optimistic and warm-hearted towards other children! Since beginning rehabilitation services, his language abilities have vastly improved. His file mentions that he does not have any difficulties in daily conversation and has great self-care abilities. He can put away his toys, take trash to the trashcan, and help his foster mom set the table! Rhett’s file mentions that he is very strong-willed when it comes to studying and learning new concepts. He is always very eager to share what he has learned with his foster family! Rhett is friendly, smiley and loves to play with his peers.

Meet this 2 year old cutie from China named Nash! This sweet boy’s favorite type of food is just like him: sweets! Nash is not only known to have a sweet tooth, but he is known to be a sweetheart among his peers. Nash does have exceptionally thin, long fingers and toes, and he has a speech delay, but that does not slow him down! Nash is able to craw and even can walk when he assisted! His fine motor skills are on par with his peers. Nash is able to tear paper, use his thumbs, etc. Nash is on the shyer side, but is definitely an active two year old. He loves playing with toys and jamming out to some awesome music!

Ian is a spunky 5 year old boy from China who loves music more than anything! Ian suffers from abnormal optic nerve developments so he can’t see as well as some of his peers, and he has a speech delay, most likely because he can’t clearly see when others are talking. Although it is difficult for Ian to communicate with others verbally, he understands his teachers are saying and can follow their directions. This little man has a very healthy appetite and is does not shy away from any food! At his time at the orphanage, Ian as learned to eat independently, but still needs help when it comes to restroom duties. Ian is so loved and brings much joy to the orphanage and his caretakers!

Meet Jace! Jace is a precious kiddo who just turned 5 in February. Jace was born without his right hand and with slightly lower eyelids. Jace continues to hit developmental milestones in regards to his mobility, developing strong fine motor skills even with the absence of his right hand. He can clearly differentiate between caregivers and strangers and likes to imitate adults. Great Wall is currently working to obtain more updated information on his current development.

Brent is a cute little guy who is about to turn 3 years old! He was born with intestinal atresia and Microcephaly. Brent is slightly delayed on his language and mobility development when compared to his peers. He can stand alone steadily and walk independently. His fine motor skills have developed typically and he is considered to be very active! His file indicates that he has strong imitation ability and can interact with others very well. Brent enjoys playing games with other children and especially loves to roll the ball back and forth with his friends!

6 More Kids Home!
We are so incredibly happy to announce that over the past few weeks, SIX KIDS from our China adoption program have come home with their Forever Families! While the wait time for many international adoption programs continues to grow, China’s Waiting Child adoption program makes it possible for families to welcome a new member in less than one year. Thanks to this quick process and the hard work of each one of these families, these kiddos are now safely home in their parents’ loving arms. Congratulations to each and every one of these families from all of us at GWCA!
Just as no two adoption journeys are the same, each of these kids came to be matched with their Forever Families in their own way. While some of these kids’ files were considered Special Focus, meaning their families were able to be matched with them right away, other kids’ files were LID, meaning their families had to have their dossiers logged in before they could learn more about them.

6 New Kids Are Waiting
Smiles, smiles, and more smiles! Preston is always full of joy with a huge smile on his face! This happy little 3 year old from China has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, but he has had a shunt put in and now his situation appears to be normal. Preston loves life, understands fully when spoken to, and knows several words. Although he is almost always happy, Preston is happiest at meal time! This little man has one big appetite! Preston can sit up on his own and he is working on his mobility skills including crawling. He is on the quitter side and enjoys his sleep!

Meet Joey! Joey is a darling 3 year old boy looking for a forever family! Joey was born with anal atresia and some differences of sex development. Joey’s caregivers describe him as extroverted, active, and restless! He is a smart, bright kiddo who can follow directions and express his needs clearly to his caregivers. He can walk steadily without assistance and has excellent fine motor skills. He loves to go to his caregivers for cuddles and can easily distinguish between his nannies and strangers. Meet Silas! This cutie is an easy going 3 year old from China who is super popular amongst his nannies! Despite having Prader-Willi Syndrome, Silas is just as active as any other kiddo his age! He loves playing with toys of all kinds, watch television, and he loves his sleep! He is an adorable little boy who is very curious about the world, always wanting to know what others are doing around him. Silas is known to be extremely laid back and a favorite at the orphanage! Although his speech is limited, Silas fully understands when spoken to. He is an extremely self-sufficient little dude who knows how to use his walker properly and independently. Meet Gideon! He is a precious 4 year old kiddo who was born with a Nephrotic Syndrome. This affects the way his kidneys function. Gideon seems to be doing very well! He can listen to his caretaker’s instruction, can cooperate with his caretakers to put away his toys, dress himself, brush his teeth etc. Gideon loves to play on the slide and ride his tricycle! His file mentions that he’s great at protecting younger children and looking out for them! He is considered to be active, kind and sweet. London is a precious little girl from China that is 4 and a half years old. London was born with cerebral palsy so her motor skills are delayed compared to her peers and her lower limbs are a bit weak. London can get around on her own by crawling but she needs some assistance walking. London is described as being a cute kiddo who is quiet and has a ready smile. She enjoys being around her caretakers and I loves to have them sing to her. London likes watching cartoons and especially likes playing dress up!

Shiloh is a precious little girl from China that is 6 and a half years old. Shiloh was abandoned when she was 3 years old and came into care at that time. It is presumed that Shiloh lived with her family before that time. Shiloh now lives in a foster family and goes to school in the local orphanage. Shiloh’s file indicates that she has some cognitive delays and that she may need extra help catching up. Shiloh’s langue comprehension ability is good and she can speak 2-3 sentences at a time to express her needs. She has some trouble with pronunciation of some words and has a smaller vocabulary than some of her peers of the same age.
Shiloh enjoys group activities and likes playing with other children. Shiloh likes to be praised when she does a good job and so she will actively demonstrate her work to her teachers. She enjoys living in her foster family, where she has a younger foster sister that she enjoys very much. She likes to protect and care for her younger foster sister and she likes to give her hugs.
Shiloh has good motor skills; she can walk, run, jump and go up and down stairs. Shiloh also has good fine motor skills such as using a pen to color, eating with chopsticks, and picking out specific small objects from among other different small objects.

I Found My Family!
We are beyond thrilled to announce that this incredible boy has a family who is currently working their way through the adoption process to bring him home forever!
After participating in our China Orphan Hosting program this past winter, he had to return to China with the rest of the kids in the program, and we were so sad to see him go. Since then, countless #OrphanWarriors have come together to advocate on his behalf, and their hard work certainly paid off!
We are so happy to know that this sweet kiddo will soon be coming back to the United States with his Forever Family, and we can’t wait to follow the rest of his journey home. Congratulations to him and his new family from all of us at GWCA and CAN!
The Difference that Hosting Makes
When many families first hear about our Orphan Hosting program, they struggle with the concept of bringing a child to the United States and showing them the love of a family only to send them back home weeks later. These are certainly complex matters to handle, both for the child being hosted and for the host family. However, when you see the difference that hosting can make in helping older children find homes before they age out, the pros of the program far outweigh the cons.
