Thursday June 19th, five of our families graciously attended a reception at the NCFA conference in Orlando, Florida. This reception was to honor the CCCWA Director Li and his delegates as this was his first visit to the United States. GWCA was honored to be a part of his visit. It was an incredible opportunity for Director Li to witness the benefits of American families adopting children from China.
At one point Director Li was chatting with GWCA’s President when he stopped mid conversation as he spotted a familiar face. He and his interpreter rushed over to greet a family and figure out where he knew them from. If you recall ‘Maya’s Journey Home‘ Director Li was present for the adoption of Maya. It was Maya’s family that he recognized, he was so pleased to see how far Maya has come in just one month and how genuinely happy she is.
One of the sweet girls that attended was our little Bella. She has been home about a year and half. Just months after coming home her family had her fitted for prosthetic legs. (Read her story here.) Bella is moving and grooving like any other child, it was heart-warming for all to see her beautiful smile and active personality as nothing can stand in her way. It’s strong kiddos like that with supportive families that encourage our staff to keep fighting for these children.
One of our families brought their three stunning daughters to meet Director Li.
These girls are all academic superstars and got a real kick out of meeting the Director. After overcoming many challenges this family is a beautiful example of how far these children can come with just a little love from their family. Look at those beautiful smiles!
GWCA is so honored to have been able to meet and greet with the CCCWA Director and delegates. We are so thankful to the families that contributed to this experience and for reminding us all why adoption matters.

Hi, my name is Dallas and I am 10 years old. The doctors tell me I have something called thrombocytopenia, which means I don’t have as many platelets in my blood as I should. I am in school right now, and I’m very smart! Math is my favorite subject, and I’m a straight A student. I get along great with my classmates, and I always like to help them when I can. I am very close with my aunts, and I always like to say goodbye as they leave and make sure they know to be safe on the roads! I enjoy watching cartoons, flying kites and picking flowers when I’m outside. I am also very good at taking care of myself, and I like to make sure my clothes and school supplies are neat and tidy before I go to bed. My caregivers say I am very friendly, and I always like to take care of the younger boys and girls whenever I can!
Hi, I’m Ty and I’m 12 years old. I’ve spent some time with doctors having my cataracts removed, and they say I have congenital cataract, congenital microphthalmia, microcornea and an undescended testicle. I’ve had an operation for my cataracts and I’m now able to see some objects and walk on my own! Right now I’m in school learning to read braille and even some English words! My caregivers tell me that I’m great at adapting to new environments and that I love getting to meet new people. My favorite things to do are rope skipping, playing ball, hula hoop and singing! Everyone tells me I’m an amazing performer and that I’m famous here at the orphanage!
Hi, My name is Ziggy I am 9 years old. The doctors tell me I have profound hearing loss, but I’ve learned how to communicate through sign language! I was a little frustrated and scared when I first came to the orphanage, but now that I’ve learned how to communicate I am much happier. I like to play and I am very active, I run, jump, hop and skip. Around new people I can be a little shy. I have good relationships with caregivers and friends, and I get along well with others. I also tell my caregivers how much a want a parent and family!

Hi! My name is Maxwell and I am 3 years old. At four months old, my caretakers find out that I was a bit delayed compared to my peers and in 2012, my doctors stated that I have delayed cerebral development. I am an active and restless boy and I always have a ready smile. I am currently living with a foster family and my development is progressing. I am able to say words like “elder brother”, “Bye-bye”, and “younger brother.” I still have trouble eating harder foods and although I like to try and feed myself, I drop a lot on the floor. Also, sometimes when I play I keep my mouth open and tend to drool. I am a good dancer but I am not very good at sharing toys. I like to run fast, jump, and play with the other children.
Hi! My name is Kevin and I always have a ready smile. I have Down syndrome along with repaired ASD and VSD heart defects. I am a very active boy and I love to play games. Noisey places are lots of fun and I love playing with the other kids, I love to play with toy balls. I have a plush toy dog and frog. They are my very favorite and I love getting to love and kiss them. I am tender hearted and am progressing in my development everyday.
Hi, I’m Wyatt and I am 9 years old. The doctors say I can’t see because I am missing my eyes, but I don’t let that stop me! I enjoy playing with other children in the orphanage and helping my caregivers with daily chores. I am very active and eager to learn! I can count from 1 to 100, and I can memorize and recite poetry. I’m told I have a great memory! I’ve started reading braille in school, and they have me working on my hand coordination. I’m also able to eat, brush my teeth and clean myself all on my own! I am a very happy boy, and although I can be a little shy in a new environment, I adjust quickly and am happy to make new friends! My caregivers say that I am sweet, easy to talk to and kind!
Hi, I’m Jimmy and I just turned 7 years old! I have been diagnosed with CP, and I had a brain scan that shows nothing abnormal on my CT. My file is older so my friends at GWCA are trying to get updated information. In 2010 I was walking independently, expressing my needs, and learning on my own. I can understand what my caregivers are asking me to do and follow instructions. My caregivers like me very much and say that I am very pleasant! I love to play outside in the sun!
Hi, I’m Jory and I am 7 years old. I have been diagnosed with arthrogryposis multiplex. This causes high muscle tension in my wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles. Because of this, I am unable to walk on my own. I am sitting up on my own. I am learning in school and have been doing really great developmentally. My caregivers say that I am very extroverted and love to play with cars. Any time that I see a toy car, my face lights up! My file is a little bit older, so my friends at Great Wall are trying to get more information on how I am doing today!

Hello Great Wall China families – Good news! We have received notice that the CCCWA has completed matching for families with dossiers registered through 12/6/2006. These families have waited 7+ years for their healthy referral and we are thrilled for them to have received their referral. Please note CCCWA has said the wait time for healthy referrals will continue to lengthen.
If you are in the 12/12/2006 or 12/14/2006 LID groups and have not been in touch with us please contact GWCA as soon as possible to review your status. As a reminder, CCCWA now requires families have a current home study and current valid USCIS I800A approval before they can be issued a referral. If you are not paperwork ready we will need to notify CCCWA to postpone issuance of your referral until you have obtained these items.

What an incredible bunch of kiddos we have this week! These five are GWCA’s rockstars. It’s exciting when orphanages are able to provide videos for us to really see what the children are like. These kiddos all have great videos of them, singing, dancing and much more. Which one of these superstars is destined to be a part of your family? Share these kids with other potential families so we can find them their forever families!
Zeke
Hi, I’m Zeke and I am 9 years old. The doctors say that I have a condition called thalassemia. It requires that I have blood transfusions every 1-2 months. Because of this, the orphanage has not allowed me to attend school, but I am still learning in the orphanage. I am able to count, sing, dance, do all my chores, and play just like my friends. When I get a little pale, my caregivers will take me to the hospital for the transfusions. I am a little bit behind my friends in math and schooling because I have not been attending school. I love to play with my friends outside, and I especially love to slide! I am very helpful around the orphanage and my caregivers say that I have a lot of pride!
Henry
Hi, I’m Henry and I am almost 9 years old. I have been diagnosed with CHD with Double exists of RV, and AV is deformed with two valves. My file has not been updated since 2008 so my friends at Great Wall are working on getting more information on how I am doing today! In 2008 I was active, on target with my friends, and living a very typical life. I had a little bit of cyanosis because of my heart, but it does not affect my daily routine. I love to listen to music, sing, and be around my peers. My caregivers say that I am loving and enjoy to play with my friends most!
Emma
Hi, I’m Emma and I just turned 6 years old! When I was younger I had hydrocephalus but I had surgery for this in 2010 and I have not had any concerns about this since then. Due to my hydrocephalus I used to be delayed from my friends. I went to live in a foster home in 2009 to get more individualized attention, but my file has not been updated. In 2010 I was walking on my own, but not quite speaking yet. My friends at Great Wall are working on getting updates to see how I am doing today!
Annie
Hi, I’m Annie and I am 8 years old! I have been diagnosed with microtia and the skin on my face is a little bit pulled back because of this. Other than this, I am doing great!! I am able to hear and I participate in school. I come home and complete my homework all by myself. I have been living in a foster family and I get along with my foster parents. They describe me as loving, caring, and lovely. I help around the house with all the chores. I can sometimes be a little bit shy, but once I get to know people I am able to open up! My favorite thing to do is read books!
