Joelle!

Her file was prepared in 2013 but it states that she was able to walk with corrective shoes. She was able to babble and imitate adult’s actions and words. She could listen to simple instructions and recognize familiar faces. At the time that her file was prepared she was able to grasp toys and handles with ease. Joelle loves to play with other kiddos and likes watching cartoons! Since her file was prepared a few years ago, GWCA is currently trying to learn more about her. Contact one of our matching specialists today if you’d like to learn more about Joelle!
Davis
**GRANTS AVAILABLE** Meet Davis! He is an adorable 13-year old boy who is brave, resilient, and kind in the face of terrible tragedy. He has touched the heart of his caregivers, teachers, and advocates so much so that they have raised money for his adoption costs! Currently, Davis has about $7,000 raised towards his adoption fees, and he is eligible for an additional $10,000 through the advocacy site Reece’s Rainbow! Davis was discovered in 2006 after surviving a terrible flood in his home town. Sadly, authorities in the area where not able to find Davis’ family, and he was taken to live in the orphanage. His medical file states that he has hydrocephalus, but advocates at his orphanage believe he instead suffered from a brain injury as a result of surviving the natural disaster. Thankfully Davis has had an incredible rehabilitation center that provided him with the support and treatment he needed in order to thrive. Thanks to the organization, Davis went from being completely dependent on his caregivers to becoming fully independent. He began to truly thrive and started to excel in both his studies and his hobbies. In February of 2015, it was discovered that Davis had a benign brain tumor on his cerebellum. The doctors performed an emergency surgery that thankfully went extremely well, and Davis once again began the long road of recovery and rehabilitation. Two months after the emergency surgery, Davis started to become independent once again. He could feed and clothe himself and began speaking again. Although his speech was slurred, he was doing better each day and was becoming more and more understandable. Doctors have stated that there is always the possibility of the tumor re-occurring, but they have continued to do follow-up scans and have stated that Davis is doing incredibly well! Davis is a resilient and brave boy who is incredibly sweet and loving despite the tragedies he has had to endure. He is learning English and is very hopeful that he can still find his forever family. Please reach out to Great Wall if you would like to learn more!
Here is a blog feature about Davis (also advocated for with the name Timmy)!

8 Older Children Home From China!
Welcome Home!
We are THRILLED to announce that in the past two weeks, eight kids form our China adoption program have come home! Ranging in age from six to twelve years old, it is amazing to see that over half of this group of older children came to the US previously with our Orphan Hosting program. We are so happy for each of these kiddos and their new Forever Families, as they begin the next leg of their journey together. Congratulations from all of us at GWCA and CAN, and welcome home!
Orphan Hosting
Twice a year, our Orphan Hosting programs bring older children to America so that they can stay with a family for 4-5 weeks. While older children are often considered more difficult to place, this program gives them the opportunity spend time with a family that can get to know more about their personality and needs so that they can help them find the perfect Forever Family. Whether the host family decides to move forward with adoption themselves, or whether they advocate on behalf of their host child to help them find the perfect Forever Family, we have seen our hosting programs help to bring countless children home.
If your family is interested in participating in our upcoming Orphan Hosting programs, visit our hosting website or contact shannon@gwca.org. We are currently matching children in our Philippines hosting program with families living in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Georgia and Florida. If you are currently living in one of these states and would like to learn more about the kiddos in our Philippines program, visit our Orphan Hosting photo listing today!
Our hosting coordinators are finishing up their interview trips for our China and Latvia winter hosting programs, and we are anxious to get our photo listings up and begin matching kids. Contact us today to find out how you can sign up for VIP registration.

Trey
is an older healthy boy that was hosted in the United States this summer! Here is what his host family had to say about him: “Trey was truly an awesome boy and would fit in to anyone’s family. He tried ALL foods, joined in all activities, and LOVED to help do everything…especially make (and drink) kool-aid. Even when we were doing summer schoolwork (math problems), Trey wanted to join in and indeed, worked out problems in my son’s math book! He tried hard to communicate with us, and used google translate well to ask questions and to tell us what he would like to do. He learned many English words while he was here, and taught us quite a few Chinese phrases. Trey is pretty athletic and loved to play baseball! He also loved board games and readily joined in. He got along very well with all members in our family, extended family, and church family.”

This 13 year old boy continues to impress us day after day with the COURAGEOUS way that he faces life. Having spent all of his life in an orphanage, and dealing with medical issues and a prosthetic leg, Ming’s life experiences have been very limited. But he does NOT let fear prevent him from trying new things. Even when he initially is afraid, you can talk him through it, and he WILL give new things a try. Ming’s intelligence makes itself evident in everything that he does. From how quickly he learns a new game, to his creativity, to how he solves problems, and how well he listens, follows directions, and applies prior learning to new situations, Ming is one very sharp young man.

New Waiting Child Updates!
Naomi is an adorable little girl from China that is about to turn 2 years old. Naomi has spina bifida and was born with a lumbosacral meningocele that was removed when she was only 4 months old. She has healed well from her surgery and she is receiving rehabilitation services to help her with her gross motor skills. Naomi’s file was prepared when she was only 10 months old, so this information is as of that time. At that time she was still recovering from her surgery and she could not yet sit up on her own. However she was able to push herself up when she was lying on her stomach and could reach and grasp nearby toys and play with them. She could visually follow moving objects across the room with her eyes. She loved being teased by her caregivers and she will giggle a lot.

Bronx is a sweet little boy from China that is about to turn 4 years old. Bronx seems to be healthy physically and is just developmentally delayed. He had an IQ test when he was younger that ranked him lower on IQ, but we have found from experience that many of those tests are inaccurate because they do not take into account that a child is going to have institutional delays from growing up in an orphanage. So whenever there is an IQ test in a child’s file, we suggest taking it with a grain of salt. However the testers did say that he might have autism, but again that is something that may or may not be completely accurate based on the testing.
Based on what is in this child’s file, he seems to have the same basic delays as other children his age who have grown up in an orphanage. He is a bit more delayed in his social skills, including how to play with others, but again that is to be expected with a child growing up in an orphanage. Many children lack the skills to play well with other children because no one has taught them how to share or how to play constructively with other children. Often times children in orphanages have very few toys, so sharing can be hard for children in orphanages and so they can tend to play by themselves so no one takes their toys.
Bronx likes to play outdoors and is quite active. He likes to look at books and newspapers and pretends to be reading them. He speaks several words and short phrases. His caretakers say that he will say “Good Morning, teacher” when they come into a room. Bronx likes to listen to music and claps his hands when listening to children’s songs. Bronx goes to school in the orphanage and his teacher’s say that he is making progress in learning every day and that he is a happy boy.

Forever Family Friday!
Hooray! This beautiful girl has been matched with a family that is working hard to bring her home Forever. Congratulations to her and her new Forever Family from all of us at GWCA!
As her file is considered LID, the family that is matched with her had to have their dossier logged in before they could learn more about her! Our LID track provides families with the opportunity to be matched with younger kiddos with more minor or correctable needs. Learn more about the difference between LID and Special Focus below! If you’re interested in learning how you can join our LID track and start your journey towards being matched, contact our matching specialists today!
LID vs. Special Focus
LID
Non-Special Focus kids are often referred to as LID, meaning “Log In Date.” While families can be matched with a Special Focus child at any point in the process, they must log their dossier in prior to reviewing files for LID children. These kids are typically age 1-4, and have more minor or correctable needs. For families that are open to a Waiting Child with minor or correctable needs, the LID track is a great alternative to other international adoption programs where the referral time for a healthy child can be several years.
Contact our Matching Specialists to learn how you can get started on the LID track today!
Special Focus
Most of the children in China’s Waiting Child program, are classified as Special Focus. This means that they are considered more difficult to place either because of their age range, or needs. While the idea of special needs can be a bit overwhelming to families, it is important to realize that many needs fall on a spectrum. This means that two children whose files indicate the same need can be affected in completely different ways. One example of this is cerebral palsy. While some of the children that we have seen with cerebral palsy are wheelchair bound, others are able to run, jump, and climb just like any other kid. As such, it is very important for families to thoroughly research a variety of special needs before ruling anything out!

Sam
** A Family has begun submitting their paperwork to bring Sam home***
Sam is a precious little boy from China that just turned 2 years old. Sam has CHD (TOF) but received a surgery for it when he was very young and it appears that this issue has been corrected. Sam’s left food was also slightly clubbed, but he received surgery on that as well and he is now able to walk on his own without issues. One of our GWCA staff members met Sam when she visited China earlier this year and she would be happy to speak with any interested family about Sam.
Sam enjoys playing with blocks and balls and is very curious about everything around him. He has great fine motor skills and is able to pick up very small objects off the floor. He is babbling and imitating the words of adults around him and he understands the word “no.” He also is able to point to the different parts of his face (eyes, ears, nose, mouth) when asked by his care takers. He enjoys listening to music and trying to sing along to the songs. Sam is extroverted and enjoys playing with other children in the orphanage.
You can contact the China Home Finding Team at Great Wall if you would like to learn more about adopting Sam. We hope we are able to find Sam his Forever Family soon!

Jeremy
This incredible kiddo’s name is Jeremy and he just turned 12 years old! Jeremy was in our Summer Hosting program, and his host family has a ton of wonderful information about him! He was born with a meningocele on his spine, but after having surgery he’s been doing great! Here’s what his host mom says about him:
“Jeremy is a very sweet 11-year old boy who is thoughtful and always wanting to share with others. Jeremy is somewhat delayed socially for his age but he is a smart boy, who caught on quickly, and actually learned several words and phrases in English over his four-week stay. Whatever he was not able to communicate in Mandarin or Chinese, and not being shy, he was usually able to cleverly figure out a way to communicate his desires to us. He loved technology and computers and was very adept at figuring them out, always finding buttons and keypads interesting. During our visit to the Optometrist, he became fascinated with the equipment being used for testing his eyes, touching buttons and turning dials until the doctor had to ask him to stop. Being a very obedient boy, he complied with no argument. Even at the dentist he found the equipment interesting so he breezed through his check-up, and the dentist was impressed at how much he was smiling at the end! He loved the ATM machine, elevator buttons, hotel room key pads, and anything that had controls. Jeremy had a great appetite, and it was a pleasure to watch him enjoy eating, always willing to try new foods, never shy to have second helpings, but his favorite food while in America was a hamburger with French fries! He seemed quite smart, but may have some of the typical developmental delays due to not being challenged academically in his environment. However I believe that he would overcome that once he was able to learn English, begin school and interact with other children. We discovered one of the outings Jeremy most enjoyed was going grocery shopping! That was fun for him, methodically going down the aisles, counting out the produce, and demonstrating his organizational skills by neatly arranging the groceries in the shopping cart. He even enjoyed putting the bags into the trunk and unpacking them at home! I think he would do well in a family with other children. We really enjoyed having this sweet boy in our home for 4 weeks.”

Paxton has great language ability, and can communicate easily with both his peers and his caretakers. His mobility is on target, and he is quick in reaction.
Paxton has a condition known as osteochondroma, which can cause him to develop minor non-cancerous growths on his body. He recently had one minor growth on his finger, which he was able to have surgically removed.
As our Sponsored Star for August, Paxton has a $2,000 grant available towards his adoption fees! If you’re interested in learning more about Paxton, visit our photo listing or contact our matching specialists today!
What is a Sponsored Star?
On the 1st of each month, Great Wall China Adoption will feature one of the kiddos from our Orphanage Partnerships as our monthly “Sponsored Star!” As our Sponsored Star, that child will be provided a $2,000 grant towards their adoption fees! Each of the kiddos selected will be a Special Focus child, meaning they have not found their Forever Family yet due to their age or the degree of their needs. Together, we can find loving homes for these amazing kids!
We encourage any families interested in learning more about our Sponsored Star of the Month to visit our China Waiting Child Photo Listing, or contact our China Matching Specialists to learn how you can be matched today! Check back on the first of each month to meet the newest featured child!

Forever Family Friday
We’re SO excited to announce that a family has begun submitting their paperwork to bring this adorable girl home forever! Congratulations to her and her new family from all of us at GWCA and CAN — we can’t wait to see you come home!
China Waiting Child Adoption
Our China adoption program allows families to be matched with Special Focus children at any point in the process, making the adoption journey as a whole relatively quick! We receive new children’s files each week, both from our orphanage partnerships and from the Shared List, which provides our families with the opportunity to review multiple files until they find a child that they feel would be a good fit. If you’re interested in learning more about the waiting children that we’re currently advocating for, visit our photo listing or contact our China matching specialists today!

We had been in the US process for a year, so we had already met with a social worker and answered some questions about age of child, etc. My husband travels 3-4 weeks per month for his job and I work fairly long hours–occasionally needing to take calls into the evening–so we were advised that an older child that might need therapy or with severe health issues might not be best for us as we are unavailable during the day. This led us to believe that a child under 3 years of age would be best. So as we evaluated the ‘special focus’ needs that we could handle, we knew we needed to look at things that could be corrected with surgery or which would not require a great deal of therapy. This meant needs such as cleft palate were okay but cerebral palsy was not something we felt we could handle. Heart issues and other needs that are more severe were considered on a case by case and would have to be evaluated by a physician before we could make a decision.Based on the age range that we were open to, and knowing that it might take 6-12 months to bring the child home, we looked at children 2 years old or younger so that the child would be less than 3 when we got home.
The medical review came back very positive — with a potential diagnosis of a primarily cosmetic birth defect and a recommendation to talk to a specialist in our city. The specialist reviewed our son’s files and concurred with the GWCA doctor’s diagnosis and said that if we brought him to our city he could perform surgery. At this point it seemed that this child met the profile of what we could handle and indeed that with a specialist for his condition in our city that it was “meant to be”! We immediately sent in our LOI and began the paper chase to bring him home.
